CANUTILLO, TEXAS (August 14, 2014) – The Canutillo Independent School District and all nine of its campuses met the academic accountability standards designed by the Texas Education Agency based on student performance and other indicators.

The District and all of its schools are in full compliance of minimum requirements, although most campuses showed their students performed at levels significantly higher than the base set by the state.

CISD Administrators said the results, which were released by TEA this month, are proof that students in Canutillo are receiving quality instruction, and that the District is ready to meet the demands set forth by its community.

“We know, regardless of the results from high-stakes testing, that we have quality teachers teaching quality students,” said Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz.  “What these figures show us, however, is that CISD schools are on par with the region and the state, and that the work being done here is to be recognized as innovative and effective.”

Figures from the state show that Alderete Middle School is one of just four middle schools in El Paso – and the only one on the western part of the county – to have earned all seven distinctions set by the state as a sign of effective teaching and learning.

Alderete was recognized for its results in reading and English Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary readiness.

Other CISD campuses earning distinctions include Bill Childress Elementary, Jose Damian Elementary, Canutillo Middle School and Northwest Early College High School.

“I could not be more proud of our students and our staff,” said Alderete Principal Marnie Rocha. “We have set high expectations for ourselves and it is heartening to know that we have achieved very important goals.”
