Children of migrants often face substantial disruptions in the continuity of their education as they travel with their families for agriculture or fishing-related work. Therefore, Canutillo ISD has created a migrant student recognition program to acknowledge their success in the midst of their challenges.

This year, Canutillo High School Senior Kayla Carrillo was selected as the Canutillo ISD Exemplary Migrant Student award recipient. This is a competitive and prestigious award where candidates must meet several requirements to be considered.

While her migrant journey may not have been easy, Carrillo graduated in the top 10% of her class while enrolled in dual credit courses. At CHS, she was a member of the National Honor Society, played varsity volleyball for 3 years, a varsity baseball manager, and volunteered with Life Skills students.

Carrillo was awarded All-District Second Team Middle Blocker, as well as being designated a Flo Hyman Award finalist, a recognition of young ladies for their contributions in athletics, academics, and leadership throughout the community.

“I am the youngest of twelve in a migrant family,” Dr. Galaviz said. “So this award holds a special place in my heart. It is quite remarkable that Kayla could distinguish herself as such an outstanding and well-rounded student in light of the many challenges. She sets a wonderful example for us all. She inspires all students to never give up and reach for the stars.”
