Dear Canutillo Community,
I want to take a moment to provide you with an update on the progress of the Canutillo Facilities Assessment Task Force, a dedicated group formed by our Board of Trustees to address the challenges of student enrollment loss and evaluate the state of our school infrastructure.
Over the past month, the task force has been diligently working to understand the complexities of our district's situation. This week, the members convened to hear presentations from key stakeholders, including our financial advisor, real estate broker, and bond counsel. These discussions centered around the details of a potential bond election – one of the options the task force is considering as they formulate recommendations to present to the Board.
As the task force embarked on facility tours and delved into the effects of the district's growth, they began contemplating the future trajectory of Canutillo ISD. Their recommendations will play a pivotal role, particularly given the fiscal crisis we currently face, resulting in a $3 million deficit. We are actively working on budget adjustments, and as those plans solidify, we will transparently communicate them to the public.
Regrettably, last week, due to financial constraints, we made the difficult decision to eliminate 13 positions from the central office. Notifying dedicated employees of such changes is never easy, and we empathize with the impact these decisions have on individuals and their families. It is a measure we took with a heavy heart, recognizing the importance of fiscal responsibility in sustaining our district's long-term health.
I want to address a matter of recent scrutiny. A photo of me and my wife purchasing a new car was shared on social media, and criticism followed, deeming it insensitive in the context of central office position cuts. While I acknowledge the perception that may arise, I want to clarify that my wife is a successful professional in her own right, making independent financial decisions. As for myself, I continue to drive my reliable 5-year-old Mazda.
These times call for tough decisions, and the task force is acutely aware of the challenges we face. Your understanding and support are crucial as we navigate these complexities, working towards a sustainable future for Canutillo ISD. We appreciate your continued commitment to our shared goal of providing the best education for our students.
