Vasquez was chosen as one of 300 scholars from a pool of more than 28,700 applicants from across the nation.

The prestigious Gates Scholarship program, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a highly selective, full scholarship for exceptional, Pell-eligible, minority, high school seniors.

“Having a Gates Scholar in our District is truly a mark of the high caliber students we have at Canutillo,” CISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pedro Galaviz said. “Ricardo’s accomplishments are a testament to his hard work and demonstrated leadership.”

The scholarship program is based on evidence that by eliminating the financial barriers to college, an all-expenses-paid scholarship can enable high-potential, low-income minority students to excel in their course work, graduate college, and continue to be leaders throughout their lives. The Gates scholars are members of an elite group of young leaders all of whom represent the very pinnacle of academic achievement and have left indelible marks on their communities.

Vasquez graduated as salutatorian in the Canutillo High School class of 2018 and will attend Boston University.
