City of El Paso Department of Public Health New Updates:

On July 22nd, a new document on “COVID-19 Recommendations for a safe return to school 2021-2022” was released by the City of El Paso Department of Public Health. A memo was sent to all school principals with the most relevant changes pertaining to each academic level and were updated on our CISD Opening School Safety Protocols Fall 2021. Some of the updates include the following:

  • Water fountains will now be functional. However, they will only be allowed to be used to refill water bottles. Individuals will not be allowed to drink from the water spout directly. Signage will be implemented.
  • Census of children for contact tracing purposes will remain as indicated in our protocols and the electronic seating chart should remain updated by the teacher.
  • If your school reaches a high immunization rate (75% or higher) for both students and adults, physical distancing will not be necessary. We will provide new guidance for this situation.

American Academy of Pediatrics:

On their recently updated (7/18/2021) “COVID-19 Guidance for Safe Schools” for the 2021-2022 academic year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following:

  • All eligible individuals should receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • It may become necessary for schools to collect COVID-19 vaccine information of staff and students and for schools to require COVID-19 vaccination for in-person learning.
  • Adequate and timely COVID-19 vaccination resources for the whole school community must be available and accessible.
  • All students older than 2 years and all school staff should wear face masks at school (unless medical or developmental conditions prohibit use).
