Hope for the Future

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo Community,

The upcoming Presidential Inauguration, COVID vaccine rollout and preparations for a return to school all give hope for a better tomorrow. But let us reflect on the good that has come from the health crisis - the unintended positive effects.

Parents have had opportunities to really get to know their children. In the hustle and bustle of normal times, we often miss memorable moments. Many mothers and fathers have expressed appreciation for bonding experiences that would have been lost in the usual hectic grind.

It seems like our air is purer and skies clearer without the heavy emissions that come with normalcy. UTEP professor Tom Gill stated that there is less air pollution in the city due to decreased traffic and industrial activity.

Even though we have been physically separated, for the most part, this crisis has worked to bring us closer together than ever before. For instance, teachers and parents have increased their collaboration to make remote learning work. School leaders have had to join hands, figuratively, to develop ongoing responses to ever changing health metrics.

While none of us would have ever wished for this terrible storm that has enveloped the world, we should all pause to appreciate the rainbow that has begun to brilliantly appear above the horizon.

As we recently announced, the El Paso area hospitalization rate has moved to the orange zone now for 26 consecutive days and we are required to adjust to the listed safeguards. Therefore, in-person instruction will begin for elementaries on January 19. Classroom sizes will be limited to 50% capacity. All teachers returned to campus January 14 and will provide instruction from their classrooms. Canutillo students have the option to continue with remote learning from home for the remainder of the academic year. Please contact your campus for further information.

Enjoy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18, while you reflect on the legacy he left on our civil rights. Remember that our liberty depends on our willingness to serve others for the good of all.
