Student attendance, engagement, and support

Message from the SuperintendentDear Canutillo Community,

Since COVID-19 infected our world and community, our medical authorities and providers have been doing everything that they can think of to protect us while we preserve the essential necessities of life. Countless brave individuals have put their own lives on the line to ensure that essential services, such as food and medical care are not interrupted.

But, where does that leave the education of our children?

At Canutillo ISD, we signed up for the dual mission of educating our kids to achieve the vision of producing successful productive citizens. This mission does not get put on hold because we are facing a great challenge. It should push us even harder to find innovative ways to achieve our goals despite the challenges. We are here, we are essential, and we have a job to do. And, we will continue to teach your children to the best of our ability, while keeping everyone as safe as possible. Parents, we ask you to join us in helping your child achieve success during this unprecedented time.

Learning expectations remain high – even with virtual learning. Therefore, regular attendance in class is critical to their success. If your student’s absence is not due to a health issue, they should attend every class every day. Chronic absence presents academic challenges for students. Improved student attendance, daily engagement, and support are my top priorities and will be for all of our teachers.

Parent - Teacher Connect

If your child is struggling in school, please call us. Parent-Teacher conference is now Parent-Teacher Connect. In this day and age and with the tools we have available, connecting with your child’s teacher any time of the year is easier than ever. Schedule a video or phone meeting with our teachers. They can’t wait to connect with you! Parents, We appreciate all your support thus far and look forward to your continued cooperation.

COVID-19 Rapid Testing Program

On another note, we are taking additional steps to keep our students and staff safe. Our District will now be participating in the COVID-19 Rapid Testing Program for Texas school systems from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM). Canutillo ISD has opted to utilize COVID Rapid testing kits as a way to screen our students and staff that are present on the campus for the instructional day and are participating in approved extracurricular activities. The program will begin on November 16 and help us conduct rapid tests of district employees and students to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campuses. The rapid tests will produce results within 15 minutes. This rapid testing program will be just part of an effective strategy to protect the health and safety of our students and staff while we ensure that we are giving our students a quality education throughout the pandemic.

Board of Trustees

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate our new and re-elected board members. I look forward to working with Patricia Mendoza who will be new to the team. Sergio Coronado, Mando Rodriguez and Blanca Trout, I am excited to continue working with you.

Sadly, El Paso is the current epicenter of the health crisis in this nation based on the number of cases and deaths. Hospitals and funeral homes are overwhelmed. Families throughout our community are grieving the loss of loved ones.

A little over a year ago, our region tragically gained the nation’s attention after the Walmart shooting. But our community regrouped and recovered. Our collective strength and perseverance will again serve us well. We will again join hands and overcome together.
