The Canutillo Independent School District announced the appointment of two new school principals in the District.

Jonathan Flores was selected as principal of Bill Childress Elementary School. Flores previously served as an assistant principal at Montwood Middle School in Socorro ISD. He has about 12 years’ experience as an educator with six of those years as an administrator.

Flores began his educational career as a 5th-grade math teacher at East Point Elementary in Ysleta ISD. He also taught at Pasodale Elementary and was a Kindergarten through 5th-grade Math and Science Instructional Coach at Capistrano Elementary where he helped to increase campus scores by 20-25% in 2 years.

Flores has served as an assistant principal at Frank Macias Elementary in Clint ISD and Glen Cove Elementary back in Ysleta ISD where he helped increase STAAR scores each year to earn an overall campus rating of A in 2018 before also helping to improve the campus rating at Sageland Elementary.

“I am humbled to be joining Bill Childress Elementary as principal,” Flores wrote in his introduction letter to the community. “Childress has a history of strong, rich traditions and ties within the community that I will continue to honor as we continue to learn and grow together as a family. I am passionate about literacy and strive to ignite that in our children so they can be successful and reach their goals.”

Flores earned a Master’s in Math Education and holds a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Middle Grades Math/Science Education from The University of Texas at El Paso.

Maria Alarcon, former assistant principal at Congressman Silvestre and Carolina Reyes Elementary, was appointed to take over as principal at Gonzalo and Sofia Garcia Elementary. She is a graduate of Canutillo High School and has more than 20 year’s experience as an educator.

Alarcon began her career as a Kindergarten dual language teacher at Canutillo Elementary School and taught 1st and 4th-grade dual language at Gonzalo and Sofia Garcia Elementary. She was also an assistant principal at Canutillo Elementary and served as assistant principal and campus instructional coach at Bill Childress Elementary.

“Being the principal here at Garcia Elementary means a lot to me because I was here when the school just opened back in 2007. So, I have roots here that I want to continue growing,” Alarcon said. “I am ready to continue to help this school grow and help all of our students achieve what they can achieve. I want to bring out their potential in order for them to be successful in anything – in academics and all around. I want to create that full-rounded student.”

Alarcon earned both a Master’s in Educational Administration and a Master’s in Education Instructional Specialist, Dual Language Education, from The University of Texas at El Paso. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from The University of Phoenix.
