Fictional superheroes have supernatural powers while many real-life superheroes use their own natural abilities to face danger or fight injustice. During the coronavirus pandemic, most workplaces were closed and employees were sent home to work safely. But, many workers, who are deemed essential, had to continue going to a worksite despite the heightened risks.
One such group, among others, is the Canutillo ISD child nutrition workers. On Friday, May 1, 2020, the annual School Lunch Hero Day is celebrated nationally as a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria. The School Nutrition Association and Canutillo ISD recognize them as true heroes who prepare healthy meals for America’s students, adhere to strict nutrition standards, and offer service with a smile.
However, when government and public health officials decided to suspend the traditional school day, administrators were left with the challenge of continuing their operation of feeding children even when the students were not able to come to the campuses normally.
“With the support of our administration and wholehearted cooperation from our transportation department, we came up with a strategic plan to safely provide meals for our kids,” CISD Child Nutrition Director Marco Macias said. “Our community has overwhelmingly responded with appreciation to our brave workers who accepted the challenge with devotion to the children.”
The meal distribution plan has been modified several times to meet the needs and ensure the safety of students and parents. To minimize contact, breakfast and lunch distribution were combined. Parents receiving meals for children at any of the distribution sites only need
to show documentation and no longer need to bring their children. And, in April, Canutillo ISD began distributing breakfast and lunch for the weekend on Fridays.
“As the situation around us evolves, we have to evolve as well,” said Dr. Pedro Galaviz, CISD Superintendent of Schools. “We can’t continue to think the same old ways when the world around us is different. I’m very proud of how our child nutrition staff members have stepped up to put our children first during a crisis.”
Bus delivery and curbside pickup of meals are available Monday through Friday. Buses distribute breakfast and lunch at designated bus stops. Drive-thru curbside pickup is available from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at select schools. The summer meal program planning is underway and Canutillo ISD will announce how students will continue to be provided nutritious meals safely during the extended academic break.
“I am extremely proud of every single individual who has worked hard during this difficult time,” Macias added. “School Lunch Hero Day is just one opportunity for our community to say thanks for all that our people do for our children every day of the year.”
