The diverse group of singers formed an unprecedented collaboration and performed the Argentinian composition "Misa Criolla."

Canutillo ISD Fine Arts Director Regino Ramos says that the students were challenged way beyond the normal classroom level, and even to a level that surpasses the 5A UIL expectations. Entire major works by major composers of global stature are seldom performed by individual high school music organizations, except specialized fine arts magnets. Even then, he says, the performing groups tend to be high school only.

“By doing this important Latin American work, we are exposing our students and community to the vastness of our heritage, focusing on the music of the highest quality,” Ramos said.

Performances took place Wednesday, December 18 at the Canutillo High School theater. It featured students and faculty from Reyes and Davenport Elementary Schools, Alderete and Canutillo Middle Schools, and the Canutillo High School chamber choir and percussion ensemble.

“Misa Criolla” was composed by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez. The work became a global hit in 1964, receiving performances in most major cities in Europe, and a special command performance before the Pope. The “Misa Criolla” is still regarded as one of the greatest works in its genre, performed by top-performing organizations such as the UCLA Chamber Choir, and world-renowned opera singer Jose Carreras.

“By performing this work, our student and faculty performers, and the listening public got to experience music of the highest quality and performed at the highest level,” Ramos added.
