Ninety Griffins crossed the stage to receive their diplomas. Collectively, the Northwest Class of 2019 earned more than $1.6 million in scholarships.

This 2019 Northwest valedictorian is Aya Abdelgawad. She will attend The University of Texas at Austin and major in computer science. Salutatorian McTzviel Oyerinde also plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin where he will major in aerospace engineering.

This school year, Northwest celebrated being named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School in the Exemplary High-Performing category by the Texas Education Agency. And, once again, Northwest made the U.S. News & World Report's list of Best High Schools in the country this year.

It was a bittersweet commencement as the school and District bid farewell to Principal Tracy Speaker-Gerstheimer who is returning to her home in Michigan. Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz recognized her during the ceremony.

“It’s not about the principal but it’s the principalship,” Galaviz said. “Ms. Speaker, from the bottom of my heart, you’ve done really, really good. You are an awesome principal. We are going to miss you.”
