Alderete Middle School in the Canutillo Independent School District has announced a new program aimed at preparing 6th through 8th grade students for success in the medical field of study. The Alderete Medical Academy program will challenge students through rigorous curriculum and accelerate academics in the areas of mathematics and science as they prepare for their careers and their future.

“Our goal is to provide students with experiences that will assist them in making well informed decisions about their future in the medical field,” Alderete Principal Geoffrey Kimble said. “Our students will have opportunities to explore different medical fields through hands-on exposure and classroom academics, making them more marketable in the 21st Century.”

The AMS Medical Academy has teamed up with nearby partner in education, The Hospitals of Providence-Transmountain Campus, to visit the hospital on a monthly basis to receive lessons from professionals in the field. Tentatively, students are scheduled to have two one-hour lessons with hands on learning from members of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and from Emergency Room personnel.

“The administration from The Hospitals of Providence are eager and excited to be working with us,” Kimble said. “They are onboard for almost anything that will benefit the students and our community.”

Beginning this upcoming 2017-2018 school-year, the AMS Medical Academy will open its doors to the first cohort of 30 6th graders. The program is open to all current 5th grade students in Canutillo ISD and surrounding area. Those who are interested in attending for the 2017-18 school year should apply by May 15. Visit the school’s website for more information.
