This is the image for the news article titled Canutillo Cross Country Races to the TopThe Canutillo boys and girls Cross Country teams raced to the top of the charts this year and lead the city in competition.

At the District meet in October, the girls team tied for first place and the boys finished in third place. The teams then advanced to represent Canutillo and the El Paso area with honors at the Regional meet in Lubbock. Canutillo was the only one out of 3 El Paso area high schools competing to bring both boys and girls teams to regionals. The boys team made their second appearance in a row. Coach Raymond Amador believes the teams’ success is in the way the program is being built.

“These runners have exemplified the true meaning of the term ‘student-athletes’ with their hard work in the classroom and at practice,” Amador said. “The team has shown mental and physical toughness while the juniors and seniors, like Anisa, have shown leadership.”

One of the best runners to ever come out of Canutillo is none other than Senior Anisa Burciaga. Burciaga finished in first place overall at the District meet and advanced to the regional meet in Lubbock where she finished in third place and qualified to represent Canutillo for the third consecutive year at the UIL State meet in Round Rock. Anisa represented Canutillo well as she finished ninth in State 5A and earning all-state honors. She reflects on her outstanding accomplishments in her Cross Country career at Canutillo.

“I feel very fortunate and grateful to have such great motivation from my coach and the team,” Burciaga said.
